Nicaragua Teen Delegation Reunion, 2011
Dear Claire, Eileen, Forrest, Maddy, Margaret and Kevin, Thank you for making time to come to the Teen Delegation Reunion Oct. 13-15. Thank you for bringing the voices we heard in Nicaragua to Wash. DC to the Capitol and to the US State Dept. We missed all of you who were not able to make it to our reunion. We thank Doug Burkholder for making time to come to be with us in Wash. DC. At the State Dept. we met with John Ballard (Nicaragua Desk officer) and with Amy ? the Dept Director for Central America. They listened attentively and asked many questions. They thanked us for coming. At Senator Kay Hagan's office (NC) - Joshua Teitelbaum -her labor aid listened very carefully as we described the sweat shop and our meeting with the workers. Cong. David Price made time to meet with us as seemed interested in all we had to say. After our meeting with the diplomats at the US Dept of State we returned to my daughter Rebecca's home to talk and share. We shared a wonderful meal at a Burmese Restaurant in Silver Springs. Here is what we learned about what we have done since returned home. 1. Colleen Kane, Cameron McNeill and Robin and I met with Cong. David Price in Raleigh to tell him what we learned in Nicaragua. 2. Colleen and Robin talked to about 25 youth at the Eno River Unitarian Fellowship in Durham. Colleen showed her beautiful slides. 3. Colleen wrote a short piece for the St Francis of Assisi church bulletin and also for the St Francis blog. 4. Claire Rawson and Eli spoke to a group of 25 in Hood River, OR. 5. Claire spoke to a group of business people called Leo's ( like the Lion's Club) 6. Margaret has written a piece for her high school newspaper. 7. Eileen Butler and Margaret will speak to the Mainline Unitarian Fellowship. Maddy and Robin spoke to the Durham Friends Meeting Youth group. 8. Maddy wrote a letter to about 30 people who sent her money for the trip. 9. Colleen also wrote to the people who sent her money for the trip. 10. Will spoke to his church - The Circle of Mercy. 11. Eileen, Margaret and Kevin met with aids to the two Pa Senators as well as with Cong. Pitts. 12. Maddy, Forrest and Gail met with an aid to Cong. Brad Miller, directly with Cong. David Price and with Jashua Teitelbaum an aid to Senator Kay Hagan of NC. Once again, thank you for making time to visit Nicaragua with Witness for Peace. I ask that each of you recruit one or two people for the 2012 Teen Delegation which will be July 14-28, 2012. Let me know what actions you have taken since returned home. Gail
